Extended car warranty costs — more accurately called vehicle service contract (VSC) costs — range from $79 to over $300 per month depending on five key factors: your vehicle's make, its current mileage, its age, the level of coverage you select, and the deductible you choose. Understanding these variables is the fastest way to get an accurate estimate without wasting time on phone calls.
The calculator above uses the same rate tables we use in our quote tool — not ballpark ranges pulled from thin air. Enter your vehicle details and see real estimates for all four coverage tiers side-by-side.
📊 The average car repair bill in the U.S. is $987. A single transmission replacement runs $2,000–$4,500. For most drivers, one major repair pays for two full years of warranty coverage.
Warranty providers segment vehicles into reliability/repair-cost tiers. Japanese and Korean makes — Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Subaru — carry the lowest rates because repair costs are historically lower and reliability ratings are higher. Domestic makes (Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Jeep, Ram) are moderately priced. Luxury brands (Lexus, Acura, Cadillac, Lincoln, Infiniti, Volvo) carry the highest base rates because parts and labor are more expensive even when the underlying reliability is solid.
| Vehicle Class | Makes | Base Rate (low mileage) | Base Rate (high mileage) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class A — Japanese/Korean | Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Subaru, Mitsubishi, VW | $79/mo | $119/mo |
| Class B — Domestic | Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, GMC, Buick, Chrysler | $89/mo | $129/mo |
| Class C — Luxury | Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Lincoln, Cadillac, Volvo | $109/mo | $149/mo |
Mileage is one of the biggest pricing levers. Providers use mileage brackets because statistical failure rates increase with use. Our rate structure uses three tiers:
If your odometer is approaching a bracket cutoff — say 49,800 miles or 89,500 miles — enrolling before crossing the threshold locks in the lower rate for the life of your contract.
Coverage tier is the single biggest driver of monthly cost differences within a vehicle class. Our four plans span from targeted powertrain protection to near-comprehensive coverage:
The deductible is the amount you pay out-of-pocket per repair visit before the warranty kicks in. A lower deductible means a higher monthly premium, and vice versa. We offer three options:
Older vehicles are statistically more likely to generate claims, which is factored into rate calculations. The model year you enter — combined with mileage — gives a complete picture of vehicle age and use. Most extended warranty contracts run 12, 24, or 36 months. Locking in a longer term at today's rates is generally the better financial move if you plan to keep the vehicle.

The math is straightforward. A mid-tier extended warranty for a domestic vehicle at 75,000 miles costs roughly $150–$180 per month. Over a 24-month contract, that's $3,600–$4,320. A single transmission replacement on a truck or SUV runs $2,500–$5,000. An engine rebuild is $3,000–$8,000. One major repair — just one — typically justifies the full contract cost.
The stronger argument for extended coverage isn't the catastrophic event. It's the cumulative effect of mid-tier repairs: water pump ($450–$800), A/C compressor ($900–$1,300), alternator ($500–$800), power steering rack ($1,200–$1,800). These repairs cluster as vehicles enter the 80,000–130,000 mile range. A comprehensive plan absorbs all of them with a $100 or $200 per-visit deductible.
Where extended warranties are NOT worth it: vehicles under factory warranty, electric vehicles (far fewer mechanical failure points), or vehicles you plan to sell within 12 months. They're also weaker value for vehicles with documented pre-existing issues — providers don't cover known conditions.
Extended warranty pricing varies significantly across providers — and the differences aren't always what they seem. Some competitors advertise lower monthly costs but bury higher deductibles or per-repair limits that cap what they'll actually pay. Others bundle unnecessary add-ons (roadside assistance, tire protection) to inflate perceived value while the core coverage is thinner.
The most important comparison metric isn't monthly premium — it's covered components per dollar. A $180/month comprehensive plan that covers electrical, A/C, suspension, and electronics is a better value than a $140/month "enhanced" plan with 30 carve-outs. Read the contract language, not the brochure.
